Job Context

  • The FAO Representation in Bangladesh is inviting applications from qualified national candidates to the following vacant position under the project "GCP/BGD/059/USA and GCP/BGD/063/EU: Meeting the Undernutrition Challenges (MUCH)", to be filled as soon as possible:
  • Office Location: MUCH Project Office, Food Planning and Monitoring Unit, Ministry of Food, Khaddy Bhaban, 16 Abdul Gani Road, Dhaka-1000
  • Duration: 12 months (extendable)

Job Description / Responsibility

  • Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Bangladesh, the direct supervision of the MUCH Chief Technical Advisor (CTA), and in close consultation and collaboration with the MUCH Technical Assistance Team (TAT), government counterparts, especially the FPMU and the policy/planning wings of Core Ministries (Food, Agriculture, Fisheries/Livestock, Women/Children Affairs, and Health/Family Welfare), as well as development partners, including civil society and the private sector, the incumbent will:
  • Review and provide critical inputs to national policies, programmes and investment plans under formulation which are aimed at reducing poverty, food insecurity and vulnerability and enhancing social protection and resilience;
  • Assist policy and planning officers in the FPMU, Core Ministries, Inter-Ministerial Technical Working Groups/Thematic Teams, and the representatives of civil society and the private sector, in implementing, monitoring and evaluating FSN policies, programmes and investment plans, and in strengthening FSN mainstreaming within sectoral and cross-sectoral policies, programmes and investment plans;
  • Support the effective delivery of training programmes, in particular in the fields of poverty, economic access to food, social protection, gender, the right to food, and decent rural employment and work;
  • Deliver on-the-job training and guidance to the policy and planning officers on issues related to poverty, social protection, resilience, gender, the right to food, and decent rural employment and work, as well as emerging issues such as resilience and climate change;
  • Contribute to institutional assessments within core partner ministries by assisting in identifying organizational development needs for better addressing food security and nutrition, poverty, social protection, and resilience;
  • Participate in multi-stakeholder dialogue to identify food security and nutrition policy related research needs, develop detailed terms of reference for research studies, and supervise the implementation of the studies in collaboration with inter-ministerial research supervisory committees;
  • Identify indicators to be included in the FPMU Food Security and Nutrition Information System for monitoring and assessing poverty, economic access to food, social protection, and gender equality;
  • Contributes to the preparation of project's annual work plans, progress monitoring and reporting to the Project Steering Committee and donors; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Educational Requirements

Advanced university degree (preferably PhD) in agricultural economics, economics, development economic, social protection, development studies or other relevant field;

Job Requirements

  • Minimum ten years of relevant experience;
  • Demonstrated understanding of poverty reduction, social protection, resilience, gender, sectoral and cross-sectoral food security and nutrition issues, national policy/institutional mechanisms and decision-making processes;
  • Experience in i) formulating and monitoring policies and programmes to reduce poverty, enhance economic access to food, strengthen social protection and gender equality, ii) assessing the impact of such policies and programmes, and iii) training and capacity development on these issues; and
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English and the ability to write clear, concise reports in Bangla, make effective oral presentations, and undertake translation between English and Bangla languages.
